By Doug Gross, CNN

(CNN) — An auto-focus camera? Not new. Not exciting.

A camera that lets you focus after you’ve already taken the photo? And lets you focus anywhere within the image you want? That’s got people talking and, according to its creator, is the start of “a picture revolution.”

Oh yeah — it can also transfer a regular photo to 3-D.

Lytro, a company launched Tuesday by 31-year-old entrepreneur Ren Ng, promises that camera will be released soon.

“I am thrilled to finally draw back the curtain and introduce our new light field camera company, one that will forever change how everyone takes and experiences pictures,” Ng wrote on the startup’s blog. “Lytro’s company launch is truly the start of a picture revolution.”

Apparently, some sharks are buying the buzz. Lytro has reportedly already raised $50 million in venture capital, an impressive feat for a company that just debuted.

Ben Horowitz of investment firm Andreessen Horowitz wrote on his blog that Ng “walked into the firm and blew my brains to bits.”

“Light field research has been going on for some time, but Ren has figured out a way to fit the technology into your pocket,” wrote Horowitz, whose company is an investor in Lytro.

The gadget, which Lytro is calling a “light field camera,” uses multiple internal lenses to capture much more light than a normal camera, at more than one angle.

That, the company says, lets a photographer concentrate on merely framing a shot, or just clicking fast and furiously. Then he or she can use software to focus later, or even create multiple images with different focuses.

Lytro calls the result “living pictures.”

Experiment with this focus software on Lytro’s site.

So far, people who have seen the product are impressed.

“A Mountain View start-up is promising that its camera, due later this year, will bring the biggest change to photography since the transition from film to digital,” writes Ina Fried for AllThingsD. “Ordinarily, I’m turned off by such hyperbole, but after having seen a demo from Lytro, that statement seems downright reasonable.”

The concept was the subject of Ng’s doctoral thesis at Stanford in 2007. He says that, since then, he’s been working to turn the concept into a practical consumer product.

“What began in a lab at Stanford University has transformed into a world-class company, forty-four people strong, sparkling with talent, energy and inspiration,” he wrote.

The Lytro site doesn’t show any images of the camera itself. The company isn’t announcing a price, its number of megapixels or other technical details yet. People interested in possibly buying one when they become available can submit their e-mail addresses to get updates and reserve one if they choose to buy.

The New York Times reports that the camera is due out later this year.

Recently I came across an instance where the SMS/MMS Icon was missing from a Blackberry Pearl 8100. After searching through the internet and trying all the various solutions, including restoring the phone to factory settings (which did restore the SMS icon), as soon as I restored the backup, the icon disappeared.

Seeing this, I decided to try fixing it without the assistance of the internet. After a few minutes of looking through the phone’s settings I tried something and it worked. Here is the solution!

SOLUTION:

1. Go into Messages

2. Click Menu (press the BB button) and select Options

3. Select General Options

4. Scroll down to SMS & Email Inboxes

5. If the value for this option is on “Separate” or “Combined” then change it to “Theme Controlled”

(NB. If this option is already on “Theme Controlled”, it means this solution will not work and you will have to backup your data and restore your phone to factory settings)

6. Save and exit back to the home screen and you should see your SMS icon showing up among your other icons.

I hope this helps others who are experiencing this problem.

Cheers!

WARNING: The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery.

If you have gotten that message on your Dell laptop and you are wondering how to fix it then you are in the right place.

Some users with Dell laptops like the Dell Inspiron 1501 and the Dell Vostro 1000 have been seeing the above error message at boot up.

THE FIX: The easiest way that I have found to fix this problem is by downloading the BIOS driver for you system from the Dell website. There is an option to add/edit your service tag. I recommend that you use that feature, as it will help you to locate the correct BIOS driver for your laptop.

DOESN’T WORK: I’ve seen some sites that advise users to replace the battery, but that will not fix the problem. Running down the battery and then restarting the system also does not fix this issue.

I hope that this information helps anyone with this problem. Feel free to leave a comment if you have tried it and it worked (or didn’t work as the case may be).

Google has launched a new service that will allow you to track the location of friends and family via their mobile phone.

Dubbed Latitude, the service is an add-on to the latest version of the Google Maps mobile software.

Video available here.

The service automatically detects your location – either via mobile base station triangulation or the vastly more accurate GPS (if available on your smartphone) – and then broadcasts your position to people on your Google contacts list.

In a careful attempt to avoid the mother of all privacy rows, Latitude is opt-in and you can chooose which friends you wish to share your location with.

It’s also possible to tell a little white lie and manually set your location to elsewhere: handy if a spouse decides to check whether you’re actually stuck on the train or getting stuck in at the bar.

Latitude works with a decent range of smartphones, including Blackberry, Symbian S60, and Windows Mobile devices, although the Apple iPhone and Google’s own Android OS are notable absentees – Google says both will be supported soon.

Latitude is also available as an iGoogle Gadget on the PC, so you can set your location from your computer as well as keep an eye on the location of your friends.

Good news for free users of Rapidshare.com. You only have to wait 45 seconds between downloads and you no longer have to enter a Captcha Code. The downside to all of this is that you are limited to a download speed of 500 kilobits per second which works out to about 62.5 kilobytes per second download speed. Not bad for those of you with a 512kbps connection. Another added benefit for free users is that you can now download files as large as 200 megabytes. So what are you waiting for? Start sharing those files…the ones you have rights to that is.

When you log into Hotmail with the latest version of Firefox 3, I’m sure that you encounter the following error:

“You are temporarily on the classic version of Windows Live Hotmail due to an error encountered during login. Before trying again, please clear your cache and cookies.”

I know this must be very frustrating, especially if you are accustomed to using the Full Version of Hotmail that utilises AJAX technology, which makes it so much faster than the Classic Version.

Now there isn’t an official fix at the moment but I’ve come across something that would at least solve the problem in the short term, until the good folks at Mozilla or at Microsoft can officially make all Firefox 3/Hotmail users happy.

Fix: Download and install the IE Tab which is available from the link below

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

Open Hotmail and then click on the Firefox Icon near the bottom right side of your Firefox window to switch to “IE mode” and you will see the Firefox icon change to an IE icon .

Once this is done, the page should reload/refresh and you may be required to login once more. After you get logged in, you will notice that you can now access the Full Version of Windows Live Hotmail. Hope this helps. Leave comments and suggestions and let me know what you all think.

First off let me apologize for my absence on the blog but I’m back now. Since I’ve started using Mozilla Firefox with my Windows Live Hotmail account, I’ve noticed that horizontal white lines have been appearing on in-line images in my e-mails while scrolling down. The slower that I would scroll, the more white lines would appear. If I scroll really fast then there would be less lines. Now it seems there is either a bug in Firefox or the scripts being used by Windows Live Hotmail have some rendering issues.

I use Windows Live Hotmail “Full Version” and in “Full Message View”, ie. with the Reading Pane off, so I’m not sure if the same problem occurs if the reading pane is on. The solution that I have found to this problem with Firefox and Windows Live Hotmail is quite simple and just involves installing a Free Extension or Add-on for Mozilla Firefox.

The extension is called Stylish and can be downloaded from the link below.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108

Once you have downloaded and installed the Add-on, you will have to restart Firefox. After restarting, you will see a new icon near the bottom-right side of your Firefox window. The icon looks like this

Open Windows Live Hotmail and then right click the Stylish icon. From the menu that comes up choose Write Style > For mail.live.com

In the new window that pops up, enter the following:

Here is the code for easy selection. Just select it, copy and paste.

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain(“mail.live.com”) {
.ReadMessagePane {overflow-y:scroll !important; overflow-x:scroll !important}

}

The Description could be anything you want actually, but I’ve use the description above as it most suits the situation. Click Save when you are finished entering the information above and scroll through some images. There should not be any more of those pesky lines.

RapidShare.com has put a new CAPTCHA system in place that asks for free users to solve an extraordinary new CAPTCHA image.

In order to download the file, you will need to decipher which letter has the image of a cat on it and input those into the box. The other image used by RapidShare.com is that of a dog. Personally I find this CAPTCHA quite tedious but I guess it’s one way of preventing free users from using those automated download scripts to beat the system.
